The weather is changing here in Okinawa. After a couple of months of what people here call 'cold weather' spring seems to be arriving. The past week has been similar to Vancouver's May, with temperatures around 22-23 degrees (Celsius). Before coming, I read the temperature statistics for Okinawa and found that the average winter day would be about 18 and though this has proven true it certainly hasn't felt like 18 degrees would back home. Often times there's a strong north wind blowing, comparable to prairie gusts, which brings a much colder sense to the climate. For the past week there's been hardly any wind at all. I walked to catch the sunset at the west beach after eating my そば　dinner on my tiny front porch and was touched by the beauty as the sun, no longer visible, cast its warm light from just below the horizon turning the small billowy clouds into purple silhouettes against the red and orange canvas. The warm gentle breeze brushed my skin and hair to remind me that I was not just an onlooker being entertained as a TV viewer but a participant in the dynamics of life. I remember feeling similarly on spring walks along the beach in White Rock.
